When Science meets Faith— Where Are We?

Often it is believed that technology and religion are incompatible. Atheists find it hard to believe that several technologists display strong religious motivations. On the other hand, not only do they follow religious leaders closely but also find an anchor in spirituality. These tech leaders do not deny the existence of a supreme power despite technology transforming human life in manifold ways.

Religion vs. technology—the unending debate
After having spent over five years in roles closely related to technology I felt this is the right time to discuss whether technology and religion can converge. While a slew of emerging technologies take over our lives, somewhere are we losing connect with the supreme power? Are our religious beliefs and spiritual selves getting drowned in this cacophony of the digital world?

Atheists may often criticize theists in failing to provide evidence that prove their beliefs. However, the very fact that the human mind has evolved to a state where we are creating digital twins, smart cities, self-driving cars, smart factories, wearables to monitor health in real-time is a wonder.

Tech makes big strides
We are living at a turning point in history where machines almost assume unbelievable powers. Artificial intelligence (AI) and rapid innovations in medical technology are increasing life span and improving the quality of human life. There are breakthroughs to enhance lives of the disabled such as 3D prosthetic limbs. A group of researchers at Loughborough University are examining how AI-voice-based technologies such as Amazon Echo will ensure that people with disabilities can live independently.

It has been predicted that smart homes will be the “leading consumer IoT use case” in 2019, which will only enhance our lives. While we stress over green-house effect and emissions, Toronto has already reduced carbon emissions by 89% over the current city average with their Smart City initiatives.

Quantum computers are a reality today where the traditional bits are replaced by qubits. This will result in a vast computing power which already finds use in smart electric grids and cities. Smarter and cleaner electric grids would result in fewer power outages and more efficient distribution of energy. Quantum computing will also enable a fully automated smart city in the future. It will automate waste disposal and air and road traffic management making lives easier for the city dwellers.

The final words
While technology plays a critical role in ensuring physical and mental well-being, religion or spirituality will not lag behind but only augment it. Both will work in concert to enrich our material and spiritual lives.

Summing up my thoughts, life on earth is way too complex to have been created just by a random genetic mutation. We need to recognize the existence of a superior intelligence which is way beyond the human scope.
